Mozilla demoparty winners announced

The Demoparty Online Competition 2011 is part of the Mozilla Labs Demoparty Project, an initiative to foster artful exploration of open web technologies.

We asked people from the demo scene to have a go at web technologies and (with WebGL being the absolute winner of course) managed to collect over 100 submissions. Now the judges have spoken and we picked the winners in the categories of Main Demo, Single Effect, Audio Demo, Animated GIF and pure CSS demo.

Amongst other great examples of using technology in a purely creative way unhindered by real life application needs here are the winners of Demo and Single Effect:

Main Demo: Akemi

Single Effect: WebGL Water Simulation

We congratulate all the winners and thank all those who contributed. Playing with technology is a big part of making it interesting for everyone to use.

I understand that Mozilla wants to be seen as impartial in reviewing the demo’s but giving the main price to the demo that doesn’t even work in Mozilla’s Firefox (not even the latest nightly) seems a bit strange.

Alfred, its working quite well in ‘Aurora 8.0a2 (2011-09-03)’ on my Ubuntu –
maybe Firefox has your card blacklisted?

As soon as I see WebGL I know that it will not be working in my Firefox. I have once read that it has to do with my video drivers (on a laptop) and that I should upgrade them.

That’s fine with me. However, when I try the same demo (like the main demo above) in Google Chrome it just loads and works. I would guess that Google Chrome has to deal with the same video drivers.

Or is this just that blacklist “feature” within Firefox that’s causing all WebGL demos to fail on my setup ?

The tab crashes in Firefox mobile beta (7.0) on SGS with stock Android 2.2.

Martijn: we don’t have exactly the same blacklist as Chrome. All WebGL blacklists are described at
    http://www.khronos.org/webgl/wiki/BlacklistsAndWhitelists

You can easily force-enable WebGL by going to about:config.
