Announcing the Firefox OS Developer Preview Phone!

Firefox OS is a new mobile operating system built entirely using open web standards. In Firefox OS, HTML5 apps can do “phone things” – they can make the phone vibrate, make a phone call or send a text message.

This week we are announcing our new Firefox OS developer preview phones because we believe that developers will help bring the power of the web to mobile. These developer phones are being developed by Geeksphone in partnership with Telefonica. We are looking to make them available in February.

Updated: Added the two phone models and their specifications below.

The Keon model

  • CPU Qualcomm Snapdragon S1 1Ghz
  • UMTS 2100/1900/900 (3G HSPA)
  • GSM 850/900/1800/1900 (2G EDGE)
  • Screen 3.5″ HVGA Multitouch
  • 3 MP Camera
  • 4GB ROM, 512 MB RAM
  • MicroSD, Wifi N, Light and proximity Sensor, G-Sensor, GPS, MicroUSB
  • 1580 mAh battery
  • Over the air updates
  • Unlocked, add your own SIM card

The Peak model

  • CPU Qualcomm Snapdragon S4 1.2Ghz x2.
  • UMTS 2100/1900/900 (3G HSPA).
  • GSM 850/900/1800/1900 (2G EDGE).
  • Screen 4.3″ qHD IPS Multitouch.
  • Camera 8 MP (back) + 2 MP (front).
  • 4 GB (ROM) and 512 (RAM).
  • MicroSD, Wifi N, Light and proximity Sensor, G-Sensor, GPS, MicroUSB, Flash (camera).
  • Battery 1800 mAh.

Developer preview phones will help make the mobile web more accessible to more people. Developers are critical to the web and to Mozilla’s mission to make the web accessible to everyone. Hundreds of millions of people worldwide use Firefox to discover, experience and connect to the Web. A web based on open standards and open technologies. We couldn’t have done this without web developers. Now we are working on bringing the power of the web to mobile, through Firefox OS, along with all the power of open standards and an open community, and once again, we’d like to invite web developers to join us.

Firefox OS App Days

We’d also like to invite you to participate in Firefox OS App Days, a worldwide set of 20+ hack days happening this week. At each App Day event, you’ll have the opportunity to learn, hack, share and celebrate Firefox OS, Mozilla’s open source operating system for the mobile web. Technologists and developers from the Mozilla community will present tools and technology built to extend and support the Web platform, including mobile Web APIs to access device hardware features such as the accelerometer.

Try out Firefox OS

If you’re a developer interested in web technologies and mobile, now is the time to try out Firefox OS. Come learn how easy it is to create an app based on HTML that has access to all of the APIs on your device. Using the same web technologies you are used to, you can make your app give alerts by vibrating the phone, take a picture with the camera or more. Play with it, experiment, try out your website, create an app.

You can create an app for Firefox OS by making some small changes to your existing website.

You can try out Firefox OS and your app (if you created one) in several different ways:

  • Install Marketplace for Android on your Android phone. (Your friends and family can also do this – it’s as easy as installing an app, so they can try out your app too.)
  • Use the browser-based Firefox OS Simulator to view and test your mobile app on the desktop.
  • Install Firefox OS on your own hardware.
  • Purchase a Firefox OS Developer Preview device! Working with Geeksphone and Telefonica we’ve created a Firefox OS Developer Preview phone especially for developers. Be the first to show off Firefox OS and your app! First phones will be available in February.

Why develop an app for Firefox OS?

  • Keep the web open. Support the open web and help make sure the power of the web is available to everyone – even on mobile devices.

      The idea is that those two models should be available in early February. To my knowledge, there are no pre-orders at this moment and no specific price information. Please check back and hopefully in a couple of weeks, we will have more information for you!

    1. Most people don’t care about open standards. Most people care more about whether they can run Angry Birds etc. on their phone, and also care about not looking stupid in front of their friends when their friends ask “Why did you buy a phone that can’t play Diamond Dash?”
    2. Software vendors care about what most people want. Except Microsoft, and look where they are going.

      I would argue that many people do care about the freedom of choice, protecting their data and similar, and that is what standards and Mozilla is about. Naturally you want to be able to build a good user experience with that as well.

      Sorry, but this is just stupid paranoia. I can only speak for Android, but I think it’s similar for iOS. There is no hidden tracking. You aren’t needed to connect your phone with Google and even if you do so, you can select what you would like to sync and what not. Even the wifi localisation service data collection is opt-in. Additionally to iOS, on Android you don’t even need to use the Google app store. And you could still use third-party services you trust for syncing. This should even be possible on iOS, where at least basic APIs for things like contacts, calendar etc. exists.

      Google and Android might track you and you might fear using their services, but this is really opt-in. Or via ads in (mobile) websites and apps, something that is still possible on Mozilla OS.

      But Firefox OS looks interesting and might be even more open than Android. And might have a better chance than WebOS.

        It doesn’t matter if the API isn’t there yet – software can be upgraded, hardware cannot ‐ does the hardware have the chip? It’s pretty rare to find a phone without NFC unless its by Apple; Firefox should not be targetting that ecosystem.

          Dude. Mozilla isn’t targeting any ecosystem. It’s creating one. The most open mobile ecosystem you can imagine. The OS is intended to make modern phones accessible for ordinary people in less developed countries. Not having the most up to date hardware is expected.

          Firefox is a browser. The browser developed by Mozilla Foundation and its community. Before you start whining about what people should do, educate yourself.

            Firefox*OS* is trying to build an ecosystem for itself, i’m not whining, I know perfectly well what Firefox, Netscape, and Mozilla are, it’s called a shorthand.
            I’m saying, quite clearly I think, that Firefox*OS* is not even being innovative if they’re going to avoid technology that is getting adoption now. They are going to get pigeon-holed alongside Apple as not trying to be relevant.

            If Mozilla didn’t want people to call these phones Firefox phones, they should have picked a better name. Simple as.

            and now to comment on your point. Nokia has for the last few years been shipping Symbian phones with NFC into the third‐world, they are perfectly accessible and usable devices, and have a robust ecosystem of developers surrounding them.

            Spare app developers and firefox contributors the PR blurb, FirefoxOS is not some magical solution to the mobile market, its just another option, and in that case you dont offer phones with NFC, I can get a decent low‐end Android phone running Firefox for Android /with/ NFC…

            As Marc mentioned above, it’s about offering hardware giving a good user experience while also being affordable. Within that priority, NFC is definitely planned for the future, but in this specific device. It might be in the first version of the official devices, or the second. It all comes down to priorities and pricing.

            As developer devices it is rather *essential* to have NFC on it. Do you expect developers to buy this and then go buy another version which comes with NFC when the next version of FxOS launches (which may be in this year itself)? Giving developers early access to hardware that may become common later is important so that they can start developing software to take advantage of the features. Especially something as useful as NFC. I would’ve bought this device without a thought if it had NFC, but right now it seems to make more sense to just buy a cheap android phone which has NFC and flash it instead.

            If NFC is what you specifically what you want to build for, this is most likely not the option for you. When it comes to flashing a cheap Android phone, it might work, but there is no guaranteed support for that hardware. This hardware is what Firefox OS should specifically work on.

            Yes there is. For the user probably not yet. I and many developpers I know are targetting the NFC market for many app’s as for example – security systems/home automation. Which is my recent project.

            If that is what you want to build, I understand the need. But at this moment, there’s no hardware NFC support nor software, through the WebNFC API. It’s planned for a future release, but I can’t say when that is going to be.

    How does Firefox OS is different than Android OS ? I agree that android is not on open platform but it is based on Java (which was free at one time) but there are no costs associated with it.

      “Based on Java” is misleading. Java is the name used for a programming language as well as a virtual machine, among some other things (including the world’s most populous island).

      An obvious difference between Firefox OS and Android, is that Firefox OS itself and the apps for it are powered by HTML and JavaScript.

      I’m not sure about the details, but to my knowledge it should work everywhere UMTS 2100/1900/900 (3G HSPA) is supported. It should work with normal SIM cards (I’ve personally used a test phone – not the above – for placing calls, getting SMS etc).

      In general, I would say that it competes in a different segment to the regular iOS and Android one – Firefox OS phones are targeted at emerging markets, will have a different pricing and are meant to be able to get much better performance with lower spec hardware.

    I dont understand the details about what is open source and what is not. But I understand that Google Android is not Open NOW as it was used to be and was promissed so.

      Basically everything on the phone – UI, apps etc – are based on open standard technologies, HTML5, CSS & JavaScript. This is different from the other major smart phones out there. And I definitely hope we will get Firefox OS to India one day!

    While a 1.2MHz processor is very useful, does that reflect the devices that end-users will have? I was under the impression that the “entry-level” end-user devices would be more like 600MHz.

      From what I know, I believe it’s slightly faster than the general public end-user devices. We are however testing on those lower devices and are working to have an optimal performance on them. My hope is that every device that’s faster will just get that as a bonus. :-)

      I’d say that this niche is pretty big in the 1st world too. There really is no good option of a basic, economical smart phone that does wifi but does not require a costly data plan. I am hoping Firefox OS will make such a no-data-plan option doable and easy. (Of course getting the carriers to allow it would be the hard part.)

      There is a web browser in the OS to access any web site out there. But you will also be able to install apps on the phone, that will have access to more capabilities through WebAPIs.

    I understand the emphasis on so called developing countries but I suspect that that the Firefox Freedom Phone (see what I did there?) may appeal to many in Portugal, Ireland, Italy, Greece, Spain and parts of eastern Europe if the price is right.

    And in the US, this phone would be a huge upgrade to many Obama phone users (political innuendo notwithstanding) which is merely a feature phone.

    I do not think that obstacles to adoption will stem from demand, in any part of the world, but from industry self-protectionist strategies.

    Emphasis on VOIP platforms and related apps, may help brake the stranglehold, given time and concerted effort (granted).

    What am I missing?

    I heard it will run a hybrid of linux-android kernel. Will you support developers from XDA to port it to devices?

    I think it will be pretty easy to archieve. They got kernels, drivers, modules, bootloaders, you got the OS. If you lend a few developers from your project to xda and borrow some recognized developers from there, you can gain marketshare easily :)

      Regarding customization: they way it is right now, you can hack the interface and push an updated version to your device. I don’t know at this time, however, what kind of capabilities we will offer end users to do that without coding knowledge.

      Mainly, it’s about pricing. The ideas is also that Firefox OS – with only a Linux kernel and the Gecko (Firefox) rendering engine on top of it – is to be very lightweight, and won’t need a lot of memory. Initial testing with games, frame rates etc supports that.

      In general, though, the low specs should be a rough estimate on what the final devices will be like (subject to change etc, of course). The main goal is to have a low price device with long battery life, initially aimed at making smart phones available in emerging markets.
      Except for the above, I believe we stand apart the most since the entire OS is HTML5, CSS and JavaScript, where Ubuntu’s MobileOS supports web apps, but isn’t built on web standards throughout the entire system.

      When it comes to developer choices, all functionality and apps in Firefox OS is web technology, so if you have a web site/mobile web site/app, it will work out of the box or need very small adjustments to work on Firefox OS as well.

When it comes to changing the phone – since the UI is made up of HTML5, CSS and JavaScript – it’s quite easy to push updates to the phone, making changes and tweaks without any major risks.       There is something called Gonk, which is the lower level operating system, which is basically a Linux kernel and a userspace hardware abstraction layer (HAL). On top of that is Gecko (the Firefox rendering engine) and Gaia, which is the UI of Firefox OS, built in HTML5, CSS and JavaScript.
      So basically, everything but the kernel is HTML5. There is no way to have a Perl script or similar other background process running.

          I believe that page will be updated as we progress. But basically, the web browser naturally offers the option to clear browsing history, saved data etc.

      The UI runs on fairly small resolutions as is, but smaller than that, I’m not aware of any plans. Since it’s using CSS for the layout, though, it shouldn’t be that much work using responsive design.
      Regarding hardware, I really cant say: it comes down to hardware vendors and more, and I’m not involved in that part.

You guys are making a phone that physically resembles the iPhone and has OS that resembles iOS.       I think that’s a valid concern. To being with: the hardware here doesn’t necessarily reflect how the released phones will look like; this is a developer preview. OS-wise, I’d say that it differs quite a bit from iOS. If anything, there are similarities to Android in some cases. The main point here is to be able to offer a low-price smart phone in emerging markets to make Internet available to as many people as possible.

      All I can say about patent wars etc is that I hope that is under control and that we won’t have to go through that. We have a very competent legal team, so my hopes are high!

        Can someone from the Mozilla executive team publish on what could be the patent war implications and how Mozilla is covered. This will allay a lot of apprehensions both passionate users and potential hardware vendors will have. As you are (rightly) targeting a mid-size market (BRIC / developing economies), hardware vendors from those regions will be interested to know that they have a potential product line available to roll-out.

        With large telcos like Telefonica behind you, there is little doubt that Mozilla hasn’t sorted that bit out – but given the rectangular layout patents and the surrounding litigations, Samsung vs. Apple litigation for 3G, Motorola patents, RIM’s patents still doing the rounds, it will be assuring for FOSS and Mozilla enthusiasts everywhere if there is an official statement.

    First, I am questioning the whole ROM thing. I don’t recall ever seeing that listed in a phone. What is that about?

    Second, I know this isn’t something us devs normally care about, but dang it. I love the Keon’s orange, but I like the specs of the Peak. Any chance we can get that reversed/offered in either color. :p

    Third, to devs out there, it’s stupid simple to put together a webapp. I have an embarrassingly simple app that I put together for Android just to get started on learning how to build an Android app. In a recent iteration ported it to WebView just to try things out there. I was able to read the Firefox OS web app documentation, create a 128×128 version of my logo, and put together and test the webapp file in like a half hour. Heck, the hardest part for me was realizing that I should create a separate page with an “install app” button to do the heavy lifting rather than just type the URL for the .webapp file. It works in the Firefox OS simulator, Firefox for Android, and Firefox on Windows 7. It was easy. One gotcha: Firefox OS won’t have a dedicated/software back button. :(

      It’s a valid question, and in general, the code is all available there. You could create packaged apps, where the files are installed as a ZIP on the device, but there are ways of getting to it (just like you can get to any image or video shown on a computer screen).

      This is something that applies to all the web, though, when it comes to frontend code, but just because it’s there doesn’t mean that anyone can use it properly.

      In general, though, you would want your business logic on your server, and then it won’t matter that much if the frontend code is visible to everyone.

    As I know I am a Bangladeshi British born. been to Bangladesh a fews times people in Bangladesh cant afford a really good phone if they do buy one its hard for them to use they rely on non touch screen phones like nokia etc..

    Hope Firefox OS will offer high end specs for a low price People can buy.

    I also have a suggestion for Mozilla and Firefox OS. I think it would be interesting if Mozilla were to develop a easy installer for Firefox OS that supports current Android devices. I think having the installer be able to backup the current Android install, and then download and install Firefox OS on the device would be very neat! Also, have a easy uninstaller that would be able to reinstall the backed up Android image. I think having this installer and Firefox OS support the Google Nexus and Samsung Galaxy lines would be very cool!

      It would definitely be interesting. However, making a mobile operating system work on a device involves a lot of hard work, special drivers etc, so the first goal is to make it work on controlled devices (where it might work on other devices, but it’s beyond the scope of what we plan to support at the moment).

I live in Brazil and in those days happened an event called Campus Party Brazil 2013 and showed better OS Firefox. The system is in the final state, according to Fabio Magnoni, Mozilla representative of Latin America. The first phone to be sold in Brazil by focusing on the middle and lower classes, for an affordable price in the market and compete with androids weak. I’ll buy mine, for sure! Hug.

    First I’d like to say that I’m super excited for Firefox OS! I think that the possibilities that it offers people are just awesome and I love that there is a great cause behind it, getting the Free Web to more people. I’m just getting started with Web Apps and I am hoping to get one of these Developer phones once they’re available but I would like to understand something better: if I buy a developer phone to work with, can it also function as my daily driver, so to speak? What is the difference between these developer phones and the consumer models that will be released later this year? I ask because I can’t afford to buy a phone only for testing apps and the like and also have one for day to day use right now, I’d like to use one of these lovely devices for both.

      First, thanks for the kind words! It *should* be able to work as your daily phones, but being a developer preview, it could be that some things won’t be working perfectly and such. In your case, I’d recommend using the Firefox OS Simulator for now, and wait till a final device is released.

    I found some problems with Google Android is the fact when I open an app like Google Maps when I press the home button rather then exit or close button I find that we think the app is closed but its still running in the background which it cosumes battery life without us knowing its running.

    I understand apps like Facebook, Twitter, social networking apps and video calling and free calling apps like Skype, Tango, Viber ect… need to be running in the backgorund for notifications

    Maps also sometimes need to be runing in the backgorund to detect where you are if you active the share location.

    what is Mozilla doing for there Firefox OS as they said an optimal battery life. but I think doesn’t it depend on the hardware rather then OS but the OS needs to be optimal for the hardware so both work in line.

    can you give me more details about this if you can or have the information.

      There’s a difference between touch and taps/clicks. For best performance on mobile, you should hook into touchstart events instead of click, which has a delay (to detect if it was a click or not).

    Most developers says they can create good quality apps on Apple IOS rather the on Google Android.

    Will Firefox OS have regular firmware / software
    updates.

    As people who buy the Keon or the Peak phone then lauching the firefox os worldwide with ZTE later in the year so the Peak and Keon wont be buggy and not in development anymore.

      You don’t want a Open Web App optimized for one platform, you’d want it to work well everywhere. Like, an app should work good on mobile, not just one mobile operating system.
      And yes, there will be firmware and software updates.

      These are Developer Previews phone. They’re not meant to be perfect nor to be phones for ordinary use.

It benefits the customers and forces the competitors to come up with genius ideas. I used BlackBerry, for a while then switched to iPhone. I also used Android.     I would like to make a small critisiscm and a question.

    First of all, IMO this is not a “keep the internet free” campaign.

    Given the fact that Oracle has ownership over java and mySQL, it is my opinion that we are discussing more in terms of “OSS vs Oracle odor in it” whith a trendy twist in it.

    And I whould be wrong. The propper thing to say is “lets scratch the script from javascript”. And with reasin.

    Given an ecosystem of OSS projects powering the serverside ( the LAMP stack and rails first things on my mind ) the only thing remaining a fight is the Client -PCs, Macs, tablets, smartphones.

    And Sun with java is wining over the later two. Which apparently is a Big Bad Thing because it is obguscates everything outside of its runtime enviroment which is a good thing in the long run for interpreted languages and when portability is a major factor. “Compile once run everywhere” rings a bell ? It worked with pascal, basic and java and it worked well for a truckload of other languages.

    In my mind all i see in firefoxOS is a closed sources ( modules ) and hardware linux kernel wrapped around bell and wisles, without a C compiler, direct access to the underlying OS and a scripting language never ment to leave the browser be given access to some parts of the hardware and thus my question is this:

    Do we yet another eviroment, yet need another programming language for mobiles and tablets ? Shouldn’t we improving the ones we already have ? Java is a rather stable and robust language server and client side to be abandoned lightheartetly and most closed source development tools that do not provide proper end results die out soon.

    Shouldn’t we presure more effectively for quality products than create ones that might get us nowhere ?

    What happend to those efforts to create a viable OSS PC bios ? Open up the remaing JVM ?

    Do we really need to open yet another can of worms when there are enough already ?

    Do we really need to write out script from javascript ?

      We believe the web has been pretty successful too. It’s not yet another language, it’s HTML5 that is already supported on desktop machines, laptops, tablets, mobile phones etc. It’s about creating an option, since the market needs competition. No one will win from having just one player.

    Can Mozilla listen to us consumers we know Firefox OS will have Nokia here maps they are working with you guys on the OS on the map side.

    Can here maps have offline maps and tom tom like navigastion with sound directions option to turn sound direction on and off unlike google maps you have to stay online always to get maps.

    here maps can update via wifi or 3G then store the updated map so we can view it without going online.

    get this valuable suggeston, Give more and more dedicated support to java, don’t prefer more value for HTML and other scripting languages(Just give support for step by step scripting languages, but recommend and work more on Java, As java resources are more in world, Probability of trying and implementing more apps inmarket will be high) just for only the reason that you have good HTML/jsp team for developing OS.

    Your OS may be ultimatum!! but there is no reason that , world should use firefox operating system(Yours OS may be overide by Android next version after your release/ Apple’s next idea to your idea).
    To take sudden change and diversion in Smartphone areas, explore and work more on good chemicals and formula which will give good battery back. Give that patent to your Open Source devices and vendors.

      By it’s nature any cellphone can be tracked by the NSA, CIA, dont know wtf a NWO is. Anything that has a radio transmit can be “foxhunted” and that technology existed since early radios. These days cellphones ID themselves on cell networks with traceable serial numbers and your close proximity to any tower makes it easy for operators to figure out your location. According to law your phone is not listened to, the network you connect through is. No matter what phone OS you have some calls can be intercepted by governments.

      If you really hate the idea of being tracked I’d suggest not using a phone ever again.

    Can you tell us how oftern will Mozilla update Firefox OS softwear / firmware I wanted to know because Im going to buy the Geeksphones Peaks phone I’ve seen some videos that the OS is buggy I wanted to know after the consumer release will there be a Firefox OS firmware / softwear update this will fix the OS being buggy and I can use it as a consumer phone.

      The developer preview phones aren’t meant to be seen as consumer phones. The OS will be updated, but at this time we can’t promise at what interval that will happen.

    Even though the firefox is a gret OS but one can not say the best OS as we all know OS of Android may be overide by its own next version or Apple’s next idea may be there too.
