Announcing the Firefox OS Developer Preview Phone!

Firefox OS is a new mobile operating system built entirely using open web standards. In Firefox OS, HTML5 apps can do “phone things” – they can make the phone vibrate, make a phone call or send a text message.

This week we are announcing our new Firefox OS developer preview phones because we believe that developers will help bring the power of the web to mobile. These developer phones are being developed by Geeksphone in partnership with Telefonica. We are looking to make them available in February.

Updated: Added the two phone models and their specifications below.

  • GSM 850/900/1800/1900 (2G EDGE)
  • Screen 3.5″ HVGA Multitouch
  • 3 MP Camera

Developer preview phones will help make the mobile web more accessible to more people. Developers are critical to the web and to Mozilla’s mission to make the web accessible to everyone. Hundreds of millions of people worldwide use Firefox to discover, experience and connect to the Web. A web based on open standards and open technologies. We couldn’t have done this without web developers. Now we are working on bringing the power of the web to mobile, through Firefox OS, along with all the power of open standards and an open community, and once again, we’d like to invite web developers to join us.

Firefox OS App Days

We’d also like to invite you to participate in Firefox OS App Days, a worldwide set of 20+ hack days happening this week. At each App Day event, you’ll have the opportunity to learn, hack, share and celebrate Firefox OS, Mozilla’s open source operating system for the mobile web. Technologists and developers from the Mozilla community will present tools and technology built to extend and support the Web platform, including mobile Web APIs to access device hardware features such as the accelerometer.

If you can’t get to an App Day, you can still sign up for Firefox Apps & Hacks, our email newsletter for Firefox OS app developers. We’ll let you know as soon as the phones are available from Geeksphone.

Try out Firefox OS

If you’re a developer interested in web technologies and mobile, now is the time to try out Firefox OS. Come learn how easy it is to create an app based on HTML that has access to all of the APIs on your device. Using the same web technologies you are used to, you can make your app give alerts by vibrating the phone, take a picture with the camera or more. Play with it, experiment, try out your website, create an app.

You can create an app for Firefox OS by making some small changes to your existing website.

You can try out Firefox OS and your app (if you created one) in several different ways:

  • Install Marketplace for Android on your Android phone. (Your friends and family can also do this – it’s as easy as installing an app, so they can try out your app too.)
  • Use the browser-based Firefox OS Simulator to view and test your mobile app on the desktop.
  • Install Firefox OS on your own hardware.
  • Purchase a Firefox OS Developer Preview device! Working with Geeksphone and Telefonica we’ve created a Firefox OS Developer Preview phone especially for developers. Be the first to show off Firefox OS and your app! First phones will be available in February.

Why develop an app for Firefox OS?

  • Keep the web open. Support the open web and help make sure the power of the web is available to everyone – even on mobile devices.
  • Simplicity. Develop on a single technology stack (HTML5/CSS/JavaScript/new WebAPIs) and deliver across the web and devices.
  • Freedom. You’re not locked in to a vendor-controlled ecosystem. You can distribute your app through the Firefox Marketplace, your own website, or any other store based on Mozilla’s open app store technology.

If you have any more questions, please read the Firefox OS FAQ.

Would you really trust open source for anything secure?

      January 22nd, 2013 at 13:06

      1. Zsolt

Considering that a “quite large chunk” of the internet infrastructure is powered by open source…
        Yes. I would.

      2. Robert Nyman

That is your choice, of course. But given that a majority of all major web browsers, for instance, are open source should be a good indication that it works.

If you are interested, please read more in Open source software security.

I would not trust anything that is *not* open source for anything secure.

A few questions about the hardware:
Will the Keon and the Peak be available in February?
    WIll there be pre-orders?
    Any information on the prices?

    January 22nd, 2013 at 04:32

    1. Robert Nyman

      Good questions!
The idea is that those two models should be available in early February. To my knowledge, there are no pre-orders at this moment and no specific price information. Please check back and hopefully in a couple of weeks, we will have more information for you!

Is this like android but lacking the feature to run native apps?

    January 22nd, 2013 at 04:39

    1. Robert Nyman

It’s an operating system where everything is built on HTML5, CSS and JavaScript. Basically, every app is native as the web layer.

        January 22nd, 2013 at 07:33

    2. Robert Nyman

It’s a common term for describing a certain resolution: HVGA, just as HD etc.

      January 22nd, 2013 at 06:57

      1. Tristan

For those who prefer number of pixels to codes,

        HVGA is 480×320 (3:2 ratio)
        qHD is 540×960 (16:9 ratio)

@geeksphone @mozilla It’s true FirefoxOS has alot of potential and i’m looking forward to reviewing the software and hardware on the developer handsets Peak; one step beyond & the Keon; all you need to begin. If your looking an independent consumer review, get in contact @mimcca

    January 22nd, 2013 at 05:13

    1. Robert Nyman

Thanks! This specific model is aimed at developers as a unique preview, so a consumer review isn’t really applicable here. Thanks for the offer, though, and perhaps when the official phone is released!

Hi Robert, I code in HTML5 CSS using various opensource products based on mozilla technologies since my college days in the early noughties. If I’m not successful gaining a developer preview, I’d love the opportunity to review the official release. I’ll keep intouch. Michael @mimcca

    1. Most people don’t care about open standards. Most people care more about whether they can run Angry Birds etc. on their phone, and also care about not looking stupid in front of their friends when their friends ask “Why did you buy a phone that can’t play Diamond Dash?”
    2. Software vendors care about what most people want. Except Microsoft, and look where they are going.

      January 22nd, 2013 at 06:15

    2. Robert Nyman

      Thanks for your comment.
I would argue that many people do care about the freedom of choice, protecting their data and similar, and that is what standards and Mozilla is about. Naturally you want to be able to build a good user experience with that as well.

Would be great to have a phone with a OS which does not capture my personal data, I guess it doesn’t right? Getting sick of Android and IOS who are trying to connect all my dots to get a total picture of me unwanted.

    January 22nd, 2013 at 06:17

    1. Tin Aung Linn

That is true the worse is iOs.I never used an android device yet so I can’t know how much it sucks our privacy.

      January 22nd, 2013 at 06:21

    2. Robert Nyman

The idea with Firefox OS is that it’s completely open, and part of that is about not having any interest in saving your personal data.

      January 22nd, 2013 at 07:08

    3. qwfqw

Sorry, but this is just stupid paranoia. I can only speak for Android, but I think it’s similar for iOS. There is no hidden tracking. You aren’t needed to connect your phone with Google and even if you do so, you can select what you would like to sync and what not. Even the wifi localisation service data collection is opt-in. Additionally to iOS, on Android you don’t even need to use the Google app store. And you could still use third-party services you trust for syncing. This should even be possible on iOS, where at least basic APIs for things like contacts, calendar etc. exists.

Google and Android might track you and you might fear using their services, but this is really opt-in. Or via ads in (mobile) websites and apps, something that is still possible on Mozilla OS.

But Firefox OS looks interesting and might be even more open than Android. And might have a better chance than WebOS.

      January 22nd, 2013 at 10:57

      1. Robert Nyman

I can only speak for Firefox OS and where we at Mozilla stand when it comes to openness and no personal data collection.

  21. John Drinkwater

Are there NFC chips on these devices? I can’t see it listed on the site or here and well, I think that’s a big bloody misstep, nfc payments are launching in the UK this year…

    January 22nd, 2013 at 07:08

    1. Robert Nyman

WebNFC is planned for a future version, but will most likely not be in the initial one.

      January 22nd, 2013 at 07:10

      1. John Drinkwater

It doesn’t matter if the API isn’t there yet – software can be upgraded, hardware cannot ‐ does the hardware have the chip? It’s pretty rare to find a phone without NFC unless its by Apple; Firefox should not be targetting that ecosystem.

        January 22nd, 2013 at 07:18

        1. Marc Diethelm

Dude. Mozilla isn’t targeting any ecosystem. It’s creating one. The most open mobile ecosystem you can imagine. The OS is intended to make modern phones accessible for ordinary people in less developed countries. Not having the most up to date hardware is expected.

Firefox is a browser. The browser developed by Mozilla Foundation and its community. Before you start whining about what people should do, educate yourself.

          January 22nd, 2013 at 08:07

          1. John Drinkwater

Firefox*OS* is trying to build an ecosystem for itself, i’m not whining, I know perfectly well what Firefox, Netscape, and Mozilla are, it’s called a shorthand.
I’m saying, quite clearly I think, that Firefox*OS* is not even being innovative if they’re going to avoid technology that is getting adoption now. They are going to get pigeon-holed alongside Apple as not trying to be relevant.

If Mozilla didn’t want people to call these phones Firefox phones, they should have picked a better name. Simple as.

            January 22nd, 2013 at 08:15

          2. John Drinkwater

and now to comment on your point. Nokia has for the last few years been shipping Symbian phones with NFC into the third‐world, they are perfectly accessible and usable devices, and have a robust ecosystem of developers surrounding them.

Spare app developers and firefox contributors the PR blurb, FirefoxOS is not some magical solution to the mobile market, its just another option, and in that case you dont offer phones with NFC, I can get a decent low‐end Android phone running Firefox for Android /with/ NFC…

            January 22nd, 2013 at 08:30

          3. Robert Nyman

As Marc mentioned above, it’s about offering hardware giving a good user experience while also being affordable. Within that priority, NFC is definitely planned for the future, but in this specific device. It might be in the first version of the official devices, or the second. It all comes down to priorities and pricing.

            January 22nd, 2013 at 08:47

        2. Skoua

As those are developpers phones, I think there’s no point in arguing about NFC yet.

          January 22nd, 2013 at 08:35

          1. Nikhil

As developer devices it is rather *essential* to have NFC on it. Do you expect developers to buy this and then go buy another version which comes with NFC when the next version of FxOS launches (which may be in this year itself)? Giving developers early access to hardware that may become common later is important so that they can start developing software to take advantage of the features. Especially something as useful as NFC. I would’ve bought this device without a thought if it had NFC, but right now it seems to make more sense to just buy a cheap android phone which has NFC and flash it instead.

            January 22nd, 2013 at 10:06

          2. Robert Nyman

If NFC is what you specifically what you want to build for, this is most likely not the option for you. When it comes to flashing a cheap Android phone, it might work, but there is no guaranteed support for that hardware. This hardware is what Firefox OS should specifically work on.

            January 22nd, 2013 at 13:30

          3. jocaferro

“As those are developpers phones, I think there’s no point in arguing about NFC yet.”
Yes there is. For the user probably not yet. I and many developpers I know are targetting the NFC market for many app’s as for example – security systems/home automation. Which is my recent project.

            Best regards.

            January 22nd, 2013 at 11:21

          4. Robert Nyman

If that is what you want to build, I understand the need. But at this moment, there’s no hardware NFC support nor software, through the WebNFC API. It’s planned for a future release, but I can’t say when that is going to be.

How does Firefox OS is different than Android OS ? I agree that android is not on open platform but it is based on Java (which was free at one time) but there are no costs associated with it.

    January 22nd, 2013 at 07:19

    1. Pimm Hogeling

“Based on Java” is misleading. Java is the name used for a programming language as well as a virtual machine, among some other things (including the world’s most populous island).

An obvious difference between Firefox OS and Android, is that Firefox OS itself and the apps for it are powered by HTML and JavaScript.

      January 22nd, 2013 at 07:55

    2. Robert Nyman

Like Pimm said, everything in Firefox OS (the UI and all around) is web technology, i.e. HTML5, CSS and JavaScript. Based on open standards which aren’t controlled/dominated by just one major player.

    Will it be available worldwide?
As it’s a developer preview, will it still work with any SIM card and will we be able to call and so on with it or is it a “offline” phone (except for WiFi)?

    Thanks.

I’m not sure about the details, but to my knowledge it should work everywhere UMTS 2100/1900/900 (3G HSPA) is supported. It should work with normal SIM cards (I’ve personally used a test phone – not the above – for placing calls, getting SMS etc).

  28. Skoua

BTW: I like the colors and design so far.

      Thanks!

  29. Clauber Stipkovic

I really liked the phone design! The orange version is awesome to Firefox fans o/

I’ll try to buy the peak version! :)

    1. Robert Nyman

Sounds good, hope you get one! :-)

  30. Matt Smith

It will be interesting to see how it competes against iOS, Android, and (eventually) Tizen.

    January 22nd, 2013 at 08:22

    1. Robert Nyman

In general, I would say that it competes in a different segment to the regular iOS and Android one – Firefox OS phones are targeted at emerging markets, will have a different pricing and are meant to be able to get much better performance with lower spec hardware.

  31. Rob Clark

Hey, couple questions, which snapdragon part #’s (or more specifically, which adreno versions) in Peak and Keon? And is there any way I could get my hands on one for working on freedreno gallium driver?

    January 22nd, 2013 at 08:23

    1. Robert Nyman

I’m sorry, but I can’t say. Please contact Geeksphone for such details. I hope you’ll be able to get one – all driver support is appreciated.

      January 22nd, 2013 at 09:44

      1. Rob Clark

        sure, will do

    Finally, the developers have tried
pity that in Belarus it appear only after 2 years
as far as possible at all to put an operating system on zte v9c?

    January 22nd, 2013 at 08:33

    1. Robert Nyman

I can’t say. Models it should work on are listed in Firefox OS build prerequisites.

Any chance to have a device presentation/tutorial at JsDay 2013 in Italy? [as you did last year for the beta] :)

Any plans for a high-end phone, closer in spec to a Nexus 4, or do you only plan to have instructions for installing onto existing Android devices for that?

    January 22nd, 2013 at 08:54

    1. Robert Nyman

At the moment, we’re targeting emerging markets to hopefully be able to offer more of them smart phones, with the open web. I can’t say more for the future, at this moment.

      January 22nd, 2013 at 09:29

  35. Pravin

I dont understand the details about what is open source and what is not. But I understand that Google Android is not Open NOW as it was used to be and was promissed so.
Hope this will not happen with Firefox OS.
All the best. India is also a great market for this phone and you should consider to release the phone in India also.

    January 22nd, 2013 at 09:01

    1. Robert Nyman

Basically everything on the phone – UI, apps etc – are based on open standard technologies, HTML5, CSS & JavaScript. This is different from the other major smart phones out there. And I definitely hope we will get Firefox OS to India one day!

      January 22nd, 2013 at 09:32

  36. GegoXAREN

    I think there is a typo…
I highly doubt that the phone has 4GB of Read Only Memory. That would be rely stupid.
Or is the Core of the OS that big?

    January 22nd, 2013 at 09:02

    1. Robert Nyman

      Hmm…
To my knowledge, that number has been given from Geeksphone. It could be internal HDD memory, though.

  37. Ibel Zúniga

Is very interesting, and my link the new desing cellphone, Very good, how cost???

    January 22nd, 2013 at 09:05

    1. Robert Nyman

Pricing will hopefully be available very soon, early February.

      January 22nd, 2013 at 09:36

  38. Doug Reeder

While a 1.2MHz processor is very useful, does that reflect the devices that end-users will have? I was under the impression that the “entry-level” end-user devices would be more like 600MHz.

    January 22nd, 2013 at 09:09

    1. Robert Nyman

From what I know, I believe it’s slightly faster than the general public end-user devices. We are however testing on those lower devices and are working to have an optimal performance on them. My hope is that every device that’s faster will just get that as a bonus. :-)

      January 22nd, 2013 at 09:37

  39. Michael Evans

As a developer who tried to port FirefoxOS, I can’t wait to get my hands on one!

    January 22nd, 2013 at 09:29

    1. Robert Nyman

      Hope you get one!

      January 22nd, 2013 at 09:54

  40. Paul Morris

Looks good! What I am wondering is whether there’s any coordination going on between Mozilla/Firefox and Canonical/Ubuntu on their respective phone OS projects? As different as they are, it seems like a great place to work together, at least on the HTLM5 web apps / marketplace front, but maybe on hardware too? http://www.ubuntu.com/

    January 22nd, 2013 at 09:29

    1. Robert Nyman

I agree that there might be some connection, but overall, Firefox OS is completely built on HTML5, CSS and JavaScript while Canonical’s perspective rather just offers web apps as an option.

      January 22nd, 2013 at 09:48

  41. Hilario Perez

Nice project… I want to buy the phone and start playing nao!!!

    January 22nd, 2013 at 10:03

    1. Robert Nyman

Sounds good! For now, you can start by testing the OS in the Firefox OS Simulator.

      January 22nd, 2013 at 13:18

  42. shawn

So they link to the geekphones site and tell us we can buy one, but we apparently can’t yet. Do we know when we can buy a developer device to hack against, and what the price is going to be for the developer device?

I know we can use the os simulator to hack against, but its not the same. ;)

    January 22nd, 2013 at 10:49

    1. Michal Budzynski

      Probably early next month.

      January 22nd, 2013 at 13:09

As Michal said, we hope to be able to disclose pricing, availability and more in early February.

Hi, This phone is available in other countries? in many developing somo Argentina in html5

    January 22nd, 2013 at 11:07

    1. Robert Nyman

I hope we will be able to ship to Argentina as well!

      January 22nd, 2013 at 13:20

  45. Luca

Is it a Personal Hot-Spot App supported in these dev preview phones?
    Thank you, Luca

    January 22nd, 2013 at 11:15

    1. Doug Reeder

There’s support for a private Hot Spot in current builds of Firefox OS, so almost certainly yes. (I haven’t actually tested it, though.)

      January 22nd, 2013 at 13:08

    2. Robert Nyman

Like Doug said (thanks Doug!), it is in Firefox OS at the moment, so I would assume it would work just fine on this device as well.

      January 22nd, 2013 at 13:21

  46. Peter

being a Third World (well, more like 2.6) resident I believe there is a Huge niche for economical Smart Phones. Few can afford the Nexus 4, or the associated cost of a 3g/4g Plan. Cel Phone with text, wifi for web apps… that I can do.

    January 22nd, 2013 at 11:17

    1. Robert Nyman

Thanks, that’s what we believe too!

      January 22nd, 2013 at 13:21

    2. Paul Morris

I’d say that this niche is pretty big in the 1st world too. There really is no good option of a basic, economical smart phone that does wifi but does not require a costly data plan. I am hoping Firefox OS will make such a no-data-plan option doable and easy. (Of course getting the carriers to allow it would be the hard part.)

      January 22nd, 2013 at 20:11

      1. Robert Nyman

I think you are right, and I personally hope to seem them in a lot of different countries!

  50. Donald McIntyre

As an end user I am confused: what is a web app that has to be downloaded? If it’s HTML5 and they are “web” apps aren’t they accessible using the FFX browser on the phone? or do they have to be downloaded like a native app? Thx!

    January 22nd, 2013 at 11:33

    1. Robert Nyman

There is a web browser in the OS to access any web site out there. But you will also be able to install apps on the phone, that will have access to more capabilities through WebAPIs.

      January 22nd, 2013 at 13:24

  51. Anonymous

The phone would look more appealing if the WiFi-Hotspot feature was added to it. Still though, the phone looks really creative.

    January 22nd, 2013 at 11:39

    1. Robert Nyman

As Doug mentioned, there is currently WiFI-Hotspot support in Firefox OS, so I would assume that will work just fine on this specific phone as well.

      January 22nd, 2013 at 13:16

  52. Manuel

This OS looks really great! I am excited! Looking forward…

  54. Jane

The screen resolution should be higher. It is extremely low.

    January 22nd, 2013 at 13:34

    1. Robert Nyman

It’s a balance between pricing, battery life and a number of other factors. We aim to make the user experience a good one with this resolution as well.

      January 22nd, 2013 at 13:37

  55. simon

How much will the devices cost?

    January 22nd, 2013 at 13:52

That information isn’t available yet – hopefully in early February!

      January 22nd, 2013 at 14:00

will it be in Australia if yes when i will be buying a my first smartphone soon and a not lock in one that work well is a bit expenise if well price and in oz soon i may buy one and give it a shot

    January 22nd, 2013 at 15:32

    1. Robert Nyman

It might be available in Australia, in time. However, keep in mind that this is a Development Preview version, and not the same as the official one that will be released later.

Any numbers on battery usage? Like comparing a Galaxy Nexus with android and FirefoxOS in idle/webbrowsing/calling/watching video/listening to music

    January 22nd, 2013 at 15:42

    1. Robert Nyman

I have no concrete numbers, but I have a similar test device with Firefox OS, and my experience has been that the battery/standby time seems to be really good!

      January 23rd, 2013 at 01:40

  58. michelangelog

I would have preferred a DVGA instead of qHD at least it kept the proportions with HVGA.
Scaling a canvas with a transformation is simple, having to manage different proportions it is more complicated :-)

    January 22nd, 2013 at 15:43

    1. Robert Nyman

I understand what you are saying. :-)
I think you should look at it more as Responsive Design, where you can adapt the content differently depending on context, but maybe in some cases – like canvas – still keep the same ratio.

      January 23rd, 2013 at 01:41

  59. michelangelog

    The S1 used is a MSM7627A or a QSD8650 or something new?
    The S4 used is a MSM8xxx model?

    January 22nd, 2013 at 15:56

    1. Robert Nyman

I’m sorry, but I don’t know the technical details on that level. Please contact Geeksphone for more information.

      January 23rd, 2013 at 01:43

  60. michelangelog

    last question …
the soc S1 use the GPU Adreno 200, which basically only has OpenGL 1.1, while wegl requires OpenGL 2.0, then the peak will have WebGL and keon not?
    or does not have neither?

    January 22nd, 2013 at 16:01

    1. Robert Nyman

I haven’t tested the phones mentioned in this post, but WebGL runs fine on my test device (which has lower specs).

      January 23rd, 2013 at 01:43

  61. Mahesh

looks similar to the competitive phones, why launching it?

    January 22nd, 2013 at 16:35

    1. Robert Nyman

To offer a mobile operating system that is completely built on open standards: HTML5, CSS and JavaScript. The goal is also to be able to offer a cheaper smart phone – especially in emerging markets – to ensure that as many people as possible will have good access to the wonderful thing we call the web. :-)

  62. Diego

Link for “create an app for Firefox OS” gives me 404 page. Can you double check it or is it me?

phones look good :D like the colors and hopefully, the price tag ;D

    January 22nd, 2013 at 16:37

    1. Robert Nyman

      Thanks!
Seems like there was a glitch with the link redirect – it’s fixed now!

      January 23rd, 2013 at 01:47

  63. Rahul

I’m not a technical person so please excuse me if I’m asking a silly question. It says somewhere in the press release that you need to make slight changes to your website to make it appear like an app. Is that right? If not, could you kindly explain what that is?

    Thanks,
    Rahul.

    January 22nd, 2013 at 16:42

    1. Robert Nyman

Not a silly question at all!
Basically, what you need to do is add a manifest file and a few icons for your app – it’s best described in the Getting started with making apps documentation.

I’ll also make sure we feature a blog post here, describing the process.

    It looks like an iphone.

    January 22nd, 2013 at 17:46

    1. Robert Nyman

      That’s a valid opinion. :-)
Most mobile phones nowadays seem to look very similar.

      January 23rd, 2013 at 01:50

  66. Przemek

What countries will you release them in ( hopefully UK?)? Or maybe what continent? :) Worse come to worse can we buy them on Amazon and what will be price? My old contract ends up in April so really hoping to get this phone ;)

    January 22nd, 2013 at 17:58

    1. Robert Nyman

It will be announced within a few weeks. But like you say, getting it shipped somewhere else will hopefully be an option as well!
Pleae bear in mind, though, that these are Developer Preview phones, and maybe not optimal as regular consumer devices.

One doubts, because the model Keon appear two different schedules?

    January 22nd, 2013 at 18:14

I’m sorry, but I don’t understand the question. Would you mind clarifying a bit?

      January 23rd, 2013 at 01:55

  68. Nelson

The User Interface on Firefox OS looks refreshingly simple! and the fact that it will work with WebApps (HTML5) is going to be Excellent! Devs practically won’t have to do any customization from their existing web apps! I’m super curious about the speed tho and how well apps will work when no data connection 3G/Wifi is available… When can I Buy one…?! :-)

    January 22nd, 2013 at 18:46

    1. Robert Nyman

      Thanks!
Hopefully we will be able to let you know within the next few weeks.

When it comes to no connectivity, you will be able to use Offline/Appcache support in your apps to make sure they work then as well.

      Sounds good. :-)
Not likely this time around, but who knows for the future?

      January 23rd, 2013 at 02:02

  70. Flossy

I understand the emphasis on so called developing countries but I suspect that that the Firefox Freedom Phone (see what I did there?) may appeal to many in Portugal, Ireland, Italy, Greece, Spain and parts of eastern Europe if the price is right.

And in the US, this phone would be a huge upgrade to many Obama phone users (political innuendo notwithstanding) which is merely a feature phone.

I do not think that obstacles to adoption will stem from demand, in any part of the world, but from industry self-protectionist strategies.

Emphasis on VOIP platforms and related apps, may help brake the stranglehold, given time and concerted effort (granted).

    What am I missing?

    January 22nd, 2013 at 18:58

    1. Robert Nyman

      Freedom phone: nice name. :-)
And I personally believe you are right, that there will be a huge interest in a lot of other countries as well! I don’t see them as exclusive to only emerging markets, but currently that’s where we plan to start at least.

If all goes well, I’d like to see them everywhere. :-)

BTW the default search engine seems to be Bing on the OS simulator with no way to change it to Google. Is this the way forward for Firefox OS? Will it be the same on the phones too?

    January 22nd, 2013 at 23:16

    1. Robert Nyman

Right now it’s the enabled option, but I don’t think that should necessarily be seen as an indication for what will ship in the end.

      January 23rd, 2013 at 02:17

      1. Zsolt

        DuckDuckGo! ;)

Any opportunity to get this phone to central asia?

    January 22nd, 2013 at 23:19

Don’t know yet, unfortunately. Hopefully we’ll know more in the coming weeks!

      January 23rd, 2013 at 02:17

  76. TechnoRolla

Great initiative. Hope it will be a light weight OS when compared to other mobile OS. :)
The front design looks similar to an iPhone, Is that ok? any patent violated?

    January 23rd, 2013 at 00:30

    1. Robert Nyman

      Thank you!
Regarding design and patents, it’s not for me to comment, but I feel certain that the legal teams are on top of that.

  77. vanderlei

would this OS also applies for a TV set ??? being HTML5 then maybe it’s a good option, if having apps handling bigger screen and no touch control.

    January 23rd, 2013 at 00:37

    1. Robert Nyman

It could potentially work. For instance, Firefox OS has been ported to Raspberry PI as an experiment.

      January 23rd, 2013 at 02:21

  78. Surya

    Hie,

Looks promising but how many expected Apps will be there in App store? and there is no news about releasing date.

    January 23rd, 2013 at 00:47

    1. Robert Nyman

When it comes to apps, it’s impossible to say. However, I would say that part of the strength is also the possibility to use the web browser on the device or add web sites to your home screen. Stay tuned the next weeks for a release date!

      January 23rd, 2013 at 02:22

  79. Roshan

Display looks extremely bright. Some of the icons are not clearly visible because of that. Could that be fixed?

    January 23rd, 2013 at 00:54

    1. Robert Nyman

I think that’s an impression from the screenshot/image, and not a fair example of the actual device.

I am confused on one sentence. You said OS is completely based on HTML5, i guess HTML is a script. So u meant OS built on a HTML script. If yes please clarify me how it interacts with the hardware/lower layer.

    January 23rd, 2013 at 02:11

    1. Robert Nyman

Basically, Firefox OS consists of Gonk, which is a Linux kernel and hardware abstraction layer. On top of that is Gecko (the Firefox rendering engine) with Gaia, the user interface completely built on HTML5, CSS and JavaScript.

Don’t you feel screen resolution is very less for both the phones. I know price is a major concern, but still user will be expecting a minimum 720p. By the way as a beginner to this OS how should i get started with development of apps for OS. Can i get a preview phone in future?

    January 23rd, 2013 at 02:17

    1. Robert Nyman

It’s a delicate balance between performance, battery life and, like you say, cost.
To get started with apps, I recommend reading the Getting started with making apps documentation.

For testing, at this time, the best bet is the Firefox OS Simulator.

Hey Robert, I got a question.
I heard it will run a hybrid of linux-android kernel. Will you support developers from XDA to port it to devices?

I think it will be pretty easy to archieve. They got kernels, drivers, modules, bootloaders, you got the OS. If you lend a few developers from your project to xda and borrow some recognized developers from there, you can gain marketshare easily :)

    January 23rd, 2013 at 03:26

    1. Robert Nyman

Yes, porting to other devices definitely is possible. If you are interested in doing that, there’s a good blog post with information on how to port Firefox OS to your own device.

Since this is a very open platform, will users be able to customize the interface other than wallpapers, such as color scheme or themes? Also, may I know what is the use of the icons underneath the Everything search bar. Are those used to browse content about the icons, such as social or movies, or are the icons used to narrow the search field, such as searching for social or movie content or apps? Lastly, I hope that the calendar app can allow users to change the starting day of the week.

    January 23rd, 2013 at 04:03

    1. Robert Nyman

Regarding customization: they way it is right now, you can hack the interface and push an updated version to your device. I don’t know at this time, however, what kind of capabilities we will offer end users to do that without coding knowledge.

With the Everything feature, that is, as you say, categorized apps/web sites that you might be interested in.

And yes, I hope for the same with the calendar. :-)

All these comments and nobody is mentioning the paltry 512MB RAM? Seriously, why so little?

    January 23rd, 2013 at 04:49

    1. Robert Nyman

Mainly, it’s about pricing. The ideas is also that Firefox OS – with only a Linux kernel and the Gecko (Firefox) rendering engine on top of it – is to be very lightweight, and won’t need a lot of memory. Initial testing with games, frame rates etc supports that.

It’s a developer preview and that surely explains the low specs. Wishing Mozilla all the best with building the ecosystem up coz finally that will only decide the fate of the OS. With Ubuntu coming up with a similar Open OS based on Linux, I’m more interested to understand how Mozilla stands apart or differentiates from Ubuntu Mobile OS and what would be Mozilla’s USP. Tough choices for devs.

    January 23rd, 2013 at 06:55

    1. Robert Nyman

In general, though, the low specs should be a rough estimate on what the final devices will be like (subject to change etc, of course). The main goal is to have a low price device with long battery life, initially aimed at making smart phones available in emerging markets.
Except for the above, I believe we stand apart the most since the entire OS is HTML5, CSS and JavaScript, where Ubuntu’s MobileOS supports web apps, but isn’t built on web standards throughout the entire system.

When it comes to developer choices, all functionality and apps in Firefox OS is web technology, so if you have a web site/mobile web site/app, it will work out of the box or need very small adjustments to work on Firefox OS as well.

How ‘free’ is the hardware going to be?
    – Are there free (as in freedom) hardware drivers available?
    – Do I, as a developer (and as a user), have access to the hardware, can I interact with it and (important to me) can I deactivate (at best: power down) what I do not want to use? Like, a) completely deactivate the camera in certain situations or b) deactivate all telephony functions while keeping WiFi running

    January 23rd, 2013 at 10:13

    1. Robert Nyman

When it comes to hardware drivers, I can’t really say. As you might understand, this is a sensitive area, so I can’t say yes or no to that.
When it comes to functionality, as a developer I believe you will be able to push your own changes to the phone, but it’s not finalized what features uses can change through settings or similar.

Hopefully this will mean I can modify the phone easily to not run f…book ever. yes I know you can root your phone but I think the idea of the Firefox phone will be that there perhaps is greater flexibility without so much risk of creating a brick.

    January 23rd, 2013 at 13:13

    1. Robert Nyman

To begin with, Facebook is only there if you access/install it. When it comes to changing the phone – since the UI is made up of HTML5, CSS and JavaScript – it’s quite easy to push updates to the phone, making changes and tweaks without any major risks. I hope this possibility will apply to the released device as well!

      January 23rd, 2013 at 13:30

  98. questioning

I’m not sure if I fully understand the concept of FirefoxOS. Everything is done in HTML5, CSS, JavaScript, does that apply to Apps/UIs or the whole system (apart from the kernel)? Is there some kind of command line level? Can I have something like a shell script, maybe a Perl script or some other kind of background process running?

    January 23rd, 2013 at 14:09

    1. Robert Nyman

There is something called Gonk, which is the lower level operating system, which is basically a Linux kernel and a userspace hardware abstraction layer (HAL). On top of that is Gecko (the Firefox rendering engine) and Gaia, which is the UI of Firefox OS, built in HTML5, CSS and JavaScript.
So basically, everything but the kernel is HTML5. There is no way to have a Perl script or similar other background process running.

      1. questioning

Ok, if I understand correctly that means that real privacy/anonymity tools like TOR will not work on FirefoxOS. That is kind of a deal breaker for me. A pity.

    Hi,

Will these be purchasable worldwide? Or only sold in certain markets? Also, would there be any special requirements to buy one of these, do you have to be a developer, or can a consumer purchase these being aware that they are still in a developer state? Also, are these unlocked, or carrier locked?

    Thank you

    January 24th, 2013 at 03:03

I hope availability and more will be announced in February. Not any special requirements, but if you want a consumer phone, I’d probably hold off till the official launch of devices. They should be completely unlocked.

Just wondering if there was any plan to resize the UI to fit small size phones – like Asha from Nokia.
Is it possible for you to relicence the hardware in something like Creative Commons way so that rest of the world could redo it?

    January 24th, 2013 at 04:19

    1. Robert Nyman [Editor]

The UI runs on fairly small resolutions as is, but smaller than that, I’m not aware of any plans. Since it’s using CSS for the layout, though, it shouldn’t be that much work using responsive design.
Regarding hardware, I really cant say: it comes down to hardware vendors and more, and I’m not involved in that part.

  107. PhilWillB

Not to be the only person with a negative comment, but I feel as though this is too little too late for Mozilla in the phone market. You guys are making a phone that physically resembles the iPhone and has OS that resembles iOS. Unfortunately, I don’t see this ending well for Mozilla — they’ll get swallowed up in the Silicon Valley patent wars, a mighty shame for a great software dev.

    January 24th, 2013 at 07:14

    1. Robert Nyman [Editor]

I think that’s a valid concern. To being with: the hardware here doesn’t necessarily reflect how the released phones will look like; this is a developer preview. OS-wise, I’d say that it differs quite a bit from iOS. If anything, there are similarities to Android in some cases. The main point here is to be able to offer a low-price smart phone in emerging markets to make Internet available to as many people as possible.

All I can say about patent wars etc is that I hope that is under control and that we won’t have to go through that. We have a very competent legal team, so my hopes are high!

      January 24th, 2013 at 13:05

      1. Gangadhar

        Robert,

Can someone from the Mozilla executive team publish on what could be the patent war implications and how Mozilla is covered. This will allay a lot of apprehensions both passionate users and potential hardware vendors will have. As you are (rightly) targeting a mid-size market (BRIC / developing economies), hardware vendors from those regions will be interested to know that they have a potential product line available to roll-out.

With large telcos like Telefonica behind you, there is little doubt that Mozilla hasn’t sorted that bit out – but given the rectangular layout patents and the surrounding litigations, Samsung vs. Apple litigation for 3G, Motorola patents, RIM’s patents still doing the rounds, it will be assuring for FOSS and Mozilla enthusiasts everywhere if there is an official statement.

        Thank you

        January 27th, 2013 at 09:47

        1. Robert Nyman [Editor]

What I can do is forward that request to the legal team. Given recent events in the patent world, though, even if things should be covered there’s never a 100% way to guarantee that.

First, I am questioning the whole ROM thing. I don’t recall ever seeing that listed in a phone. What is that about?

Second, I know this isn’t something us devs normally care about, but dang it. I love the Keon’s orange, but I like the specs of the Peak. Any chance we can get that reversed/offered in either color. :p

Third, to devs out there, it’s stupid simple to put together a webapp. I have an embarrassingly simple app that I put together for Android just to get started on learning how to build an Android app. In a recent iteration ported it to WebView just to try things out there. I was able to read the Firefox OS web app documentation, create a 128×128 version of my logo, and put together and test the webapp file in like a half hour. Heck, the hardest part for me was realizing that I should create a separate page with an “install app” button to do the heavy lifting rather than just type the URL for the .webapp file. It works in the Firefox OS simulator, Firefox for Android, and Firefox on Windows 7. It was easy. One gotcha: Firefox OS won’t have a dedicated/software back button. :(

With so many developers into HTML 5 , the Firefox OS looks promising.
Why is every icon circular in shape ?
is it so to maintain the unanimity?

I did not find much information on Gonk so far. As I understand, it’s kind of a very light Linux distribution and Gecko is ported to it. I guess my questions are

    – is Gonk going to be released under a free license like GPL?

    – Is the source code maybe available already?

    – I think Gecko is written in C++, would that mean other C++ software will be portable to Gonk?

    January 25th, 2013 at 20:10

    1. Robert Nyman [Editor]

I can’t really say at this time. Since Gaia, the UI of Firefox OS, is built entirely with HTML5, CSS and JavaScript, it’s easy to tweak and update. I’m not sure whether that will be a possibility for apps at launch, though.

Cannot wait to get my hands on one of these, I’m hoping that the whole idea will pick up steam soon! Just one little thing – neither the Keon nor the Peak spec seem to list Bluetooth connectivity? Is it correct?

    January 26th, 2013 at 13:46

    1. Robert Nyman [Editor]

Good question. Firefox OS and test devices do support it, so I feel fairly certain these devices will have it as well.

      January 28th, 2013 at 08:51

      1. Tom

This would be great as it’d make these even more appealing to the developers.

Anyway, I am very positive and enthusiastic about this fully open, community driven platform. Thank you for all your efforts, I feel that very interesting times are coming to the world of mobile applications. Who knows, transparency, openness and flexibility may help Firefox OS make its way into areas other platforms have been struggling to.

I know targets can slip, but is there any estimate on when in February they might be available? Beginning? Middle? End?

Will these only be available for a short time? Will there be multiple batches? What happens once the first non-developer phones surface?

The post mentions two features in the Keon model that are not present in the specs of Peak model, namely:

    Over the air updates
Unlocked, add your own SIM card

Is this just a typo or is there any actual difference between the models regarding those two features?

I’m sorry for the erratic post – I was browsing this page from an android device on which the keyboard keeps popping up randomly, hence the ”’ which I wasn’t aware of… And you know what? The vendor does not bother to fix it, and won’t let anyone else do it either. One of my many reasons to switch to a truly open platform.

    Congrats on the announcemente

I was wondering, for comercial apps, who will you prevent people from copying the code??? it’s all js and html5, so there’s no way to compile or obfuscate it.

    Am I right?

    January 28th, 2013 at 12:22

    1. Robert Nyman [Editor]

      Thank you!

It’s a valid question, and in general, the code is all available there. You could create packaged apps, where the files are installed as a ZIP on the device, but there are ways of getting to it (just like you can get to any image or video shown on a computer screen).

This is something that applies to all the web, though, when it comes to frontend code, but just because it’s there doesn’t mean that anyone can use it properly.

In general, though, you would want your business logic on your server, and then it won’t matter that much if the frontend code is visible to everyone.

great job with Firefox OS and phones! Since Google changed its terms of contract, I have always wanted to change my phone to an open-source community OS. Firefox OS has been the closest to my expectations.

Why are you still trying to built on pc architecture? Well I mean you’re using “linux kernel” which is designed for pc’s. But mobile phones are based on ARM architecture. Why don’t you just code a “kernel” or “micro kernel” (like symbian) for mobile phones? When you bring those to the market I’m gonna say exactly that: “just another silly enterprenuership, why do they just try thinking?”

    January 30th, 2013 at 17:00

    1. Robert Nyman [Editor]

It’s a small Linux kernel, optimized for mobile devices. Similar to the core of Android, but then Android has a number of extra things on top as well.

Glad you’ve found a mobile operating system that you like. Personally, though, I don’t see it as beating but rather as offering alternatives – with user experience, pricing and much more.
It’s like cars – it would be a boring world if we only had one model.

We are embracing the Firefox OS, especially with it using web technologies, which perfectly fits a project we are doing with some big retail companies in the UK. We are eagily waiting for these phones to be released to install our apps and test the performance, is there a rough date on when these phones would be set for corporate purchasing? 2014?

            February 20th, 2013 at 12:57

          2. Robert Nyman [Editor]

I can’t really say dates, and even if it’s rough, timelines change etc. That said, you should definitely expect something this year – bear in mind, though, that the first locations are primarily emerging markets.

You’ve mistaken. Google has done nothing, except violating the principles of Open Source & copying the patents. Its the greatness of Linux Kernel. Linux Rocks!!!

I hope more mobile manufacturers look forward to develop a phone with The Firefox OS… :)

      February 13th, 2013 at 21:14

    3. Tom

Rakesh L: FirefoxOS is not about beating anything but to promote openness, diversity, and to embrace and evolve the web technologies. I even dare to say that FirefoxOS has more potential than Android.

Android itself is good, and will continue to grow for years to come, but its ecosystem becomes more and more fragmented, and the word ‘openness’ in Android world is exactly that: just a (broken) word I’m afraid.

Firefox OS should target Bangladesh, India, Africa. Ect.. the developing countries.

As I know I am a Bangladeshi British born. been to Bangladesh a fews times people in Bangladesh cant afford a really good phone if they do buy one its hard for them to use they rely on non touch screen phones like nokia etc..

Hope Firefox OS will offer high end specs for a low price People can buy.

I also have a suggestion for Mozilla and Firefox OS. I think it would be interesting if Mozilla were to develop a easy installer for Firefox OS that supports current Android devices. I think having the installer be able to backup the current Android install, and then download and install Firefox OS on the device would be very neat! Also, have a easy uninstaller that would be able to reinstall the backed up Android image. I think having this installer and Firefox OS support the Google Nexus and Samsung Galaxy lines would be very cool!

    February 6th, 2013 at 14:37

    1. Robert Nyman [Editor]

It would definitely be interesting. However, making a mobile operating system work on a device involves a lot of hard work, special drivers etc, so the first goal is to make it work on controlled devices (where it might work on other devices, but it’s beyond the scope of what we plan to support at the moment).

Hello! Congratulations matter! I am very confinate system oeracional Mozilla Firefox OS. Very promising! I live in Brazil and in those days happened an event called Campus Party Brazil 2013 and showed better OS Firefox. The system is in the final state, according to Fabio Magnoni, Mozilla representative of Latin America. The first phone to be sold in Brazil by focusing on the middle and lower classes, for an affordable price in the market and compete with androids weak. I’ll buy mine, for sure! Hug.

    Hi Robert,

I live in London but I’m writing up a research proposal on mobile operating systems and I’m hugely interested in knowing in general the challenges faced by Mozilla to in designing, developing and testing an OS which is focused on the developing markets.

Secondly I’m from Africa and would like to know if the device when the device might be launched there.

Also when are emulators going to be available for development?

    Thanks

      Hi Alex,

      1. I recommend contacting press [at] mozilla [dot] com when it comes to the overarching question about challenges and developing markets.
      2. I have no more information about that at this time, but I hope it will be.
      3. We have the Firefox OS Simulator for that.

  170. Chris D.

First I’d like to say that I’m super excited for Firefox OS! I think that the possibilities that it offers people are just awesome and I love that there is a great cause behind it, getting the Free Web to more people. I’m just getting started with Web Apps and I am hoping to get one of these Developer phones once they’re available but I would like to understand something better: if I buy a developer phone to work with, can it also function as my daily driver, so to speak? What is the difference between these developer phones and the consumer models that will be released later this year? I ask because I can’t afford to buy a phone only for testing apps and the like and also have one for day to day use right now, I’d like to use one of these lovely devices for both.

    February 10th, 2013 at 19:29

    1. Robert Nyman [Editor]

First, thanks for the kind words! It *should* be able to work as your daily phones, but being a developer preview, it could be that some things won’t be working perfectly and such. In your case, I’d recommend using the Firefox OS Simulator for now, and wait till a final device is released.

I found some problems with Google Android is the fact when I open an app like Google Maps when I press the home button rather then exit or close button I find that we think the app is closed but its still running in the background which it cosumes battery life without us knowing its running.

I understand apps like Facebook, Twitter, social networking apps and video calling and free calling apps like Skype, Tango, Viber ect… need to be running in the backgorund for notifications

Maps also sometimes need to be runing in the backgorund to detect where you are if you active the share location.

what is Mozilla doing for there Firefox OS as they said an optimal battery life. but I think doesn’t it depend on the hardware rather then OS but the OS needs to be optimal for the hardware so both work in line.

can you give me more details about this if you can or have the information.

    February 11th, 2013 at 05:34

    1. Robert Nyman [Editor]

What I can say at this time is that it’s a delicate balance of keeping apps and their state available paired with achieving optimal battery life. It’s a valid concern, and we’re working on finding the optimal way of making it work.

I was wondering if there is possibly an estimate for when the developer devices will be availible. I would like to start developing for these phones. Any new news would be great!

    February 12th, 2013 at 10:59

    1. Robert Nyman [Editor]

I can’t give an estimate, but you can start developing right now. Get the Firefox OS Simulator and start building Open Web Apps.

Is HTML5 apps a shortcut to websites and will games be made in HTML5.

I am waiting too as the above said and also many other people like me are waiting for Peaks and Keon phones.

    February 13th, 2013 at 08:52

    1. Robert Nyman [Editor]

I think reading Getting started with Open Web Apps – why and how explains more about what it is. And yes, the web is already filled with HTML5 games and that applies to Firefox OS as well.

      February 13th, 2013 at 09:06

  175. Keithics

I am excited about this. It’s good to have an alternative mobile OS.

Just a question.. how fast is the “app touch response” ? I believe the html apps is quite slow to respond on taps or clicks.

    February 13th, 2013 at 10:08

    1. Robert Nyman [Editor]

There’s a difference between touch and taps/clicks. For best performance on mobile, you should hook into touchstart events instead of click, which has a delay (to detect if it was a click or not).

Another thing I f forgot to mention will the html games be optimized for Firefox OS if I go to a online games website which the developer did not optimize it for Firefox OS will it be optimzed automaticly.

Most developers says they can create good quality apps on Apple IOS rather the on Google Android.

Will Firefox OS have regular firmware / software
    updates.

As people who buy the Keon or the Peak phone then lauching the firefox os worldwide with ZTE later in the year so the Peak and Keon wont be buggy and not in development anymore.

    February 13th, 2013 at 11:08

    1. Robert Nyman [Editor]

You don’t want a Open Web App optimized for one platform, you’d want it to work well everywhere. Like, an app should work good on mobile, not just one mobile operating system.
And yes, there will be firmware and software updates.

These are Developer Previews phone. They’re not meant to be perfect nor to be phones for ordinary use.

    February 13th, 2013 at 20:26

    1. Robert Nyman [Editor]

If you want a preview that’s not intended or everyday use, and that you develop Open Web Apps and need to test them. But that qualification is up to you, we won’t be doing any tests.

Sounds good, can’t wait for pricing. Any guess if the consumer ones will be more powerful? I know these phones are targeted at low budget but if they swap that processor to the upcoming tegra 4 and bump the ram up a little. I’d throw some money towards you guys ;)

    February 14th, 2013 at 12:46

Having multiple operating systems is good for the phone market. I love variation and competition in the phone market. It benefits the customers and forces the competitors to come up with genius ideas. I used BlackBerry, for a while then switched to iPhone. I also used Android. Now I am looking to buy a windows phone probably Nokia L920, soon. I would love to use Firefox OS too.

    February 19th, 2013 at 16:23

New competitors are Samsung Tizen, Canonical Ltd. / Ubuntu Foundation’s Ubuntu OS, Blackberry OS and Firefox OS.

Who will win in the mobile, tablet, laptop market.

To me it looks like Firefox OS all the way they the more open source then the other new competitors.

Who will has good 3D graphics on a budget phone other then Firefox OS no one I think more power from a bedget phone.

We all know mozilla said they will go on to powerful phones later but looking at the budget phone it beats other budget phones and some mid range phones.

I would like to make a small critisiscm and a question.

First of all, IMO this is not a “keep the internet free” campaign.

Given the fact that Oracle has ownership over java and mySQL, it is my opinion that we are discussing more in terms of “OSS vs Oracle odor in it” whith a trendy twist in it.

And I whould be wrong. The propper thing to say is “lets scratch the script from javascript”. And with reasin.

Given an ecosystem of OSS projects powering the serverside ( the LAMP stack and rails first things on my mind ) the only thing remaining a fight is the Client -PCs, Macs, tablets, smartphones.

And Sun with java is wining over the later two. Which apparently is a Big Bad Thing because it is obguscates everything outside of its runtime enviroment which is a good thing in the long run for interpreted languages and when portability is a major factor. “Compile once run everywhere” rings a bell ? It worked with pascal, basic and java and it worked well for a truckload of other languages.

In my mind all i see in firefoxOS is a closed sources ( modules ) and hardware linux kernel wrapped around bell and wisles, without a C compiler, direct access to the underlying OS and a scripting language never ment to leave the browser be given access to some parts of the hardware and thus my question is this:

Do we yet another eviroment, yet need another programming language for mobiles and tablets ? Shouldn’t we improving the ones we already have ? Java is a rather stable and robust language server and client side to be abandoned lightheartetly and most closed source development tools that do not provide proper end results die out soon.

Shouldn’t we presure more effectively for quality products than create ones that might get us nowhere ?

What happend to those efforts to create a viable OSS PC bios ? Open up the remaing JVM ?

Do we really need to open yet another can of worms when there are enough already ?

Do we really need to write out script from javascript ?

    February 21st, 2013 at 04:10

    1. Robert Nyman [Editor]

We believe the web has been pretty successful too. It’s not yet another language, it’s HTML5 that is already supported on desktop machines, laptops, tablets, mobile phones etc. It’s about creating an option, since the market needs competition. No one will win from having just one player.

Can Mozilla listen to us consumers we know Firefox OS will have Nokia here maps they are working with you guys on the OS on the map side.

Can here maps have offline maps and tom tom like navigastion with sound directions option to turn sound direction on and off unlike google maps you have to stay online always to get maps.

here maps can update via wifi or 3G then store the updated map so we can view it without going online.

    Hi Team,

get this valuable suggeston, Give more and more dedicated support to java, don’t prefer more value for HTML and other scripting languages(Just give support for step by step scripting languages, but recommend and work more on Java, As java resources are more in world, Probability of trying and implementing more apps inmarket will be high) just for only the reason that you have good HTML/jsp team for developing OS.

    February 21st, 2013 at 23:06

    1. Robert Nyman [Editor]

I’d argue that there are a lot more HTML developers in the world than Java developers, if that would be the only factor.

      February 22nd, 2013 at 01:49

  201. Naveen

    Second Suggestion,

Your OS may be ultimatum!! but there is no reason that , world should use firefox operating system(Yours OS may be overide by Android next version after your release/ Apple’s next idea to your idea).
To take sudden change and diversion in Smartphone areas, explore and work more on good chemicals and formula which will give good battery back. Give that patent to your Open Source devices and vendors.

But as you know – it deterrioated structurally.

Anybody with an IQ larger than their shoe size MUST realise that IOS and ANDROID are NSA CIA NWO Tracking OS devices. You can’t make this sh1t up! Android devices know your exact location 24/7 so that if President ‘ODingo’ signs another executive order he can put a hellfire missile up your hind-end. ABANDON SUCH SPY WARE riddled homing devices and go with Ubuntu or Firefox, as yet not poisoned by MARXIST NWO ‘elite’ scum…

    February 24th, 2013 at 10:29

    1. Bryan Mellincort

By it’s nature any cellphone can be tracked by the NSA, CIA, dont know wtf a NWO is. Anything that has a radio transmit can be “foxhunted” and that technology existed since early radios. These days cellphones ID themselves on cell networks with traceable serial numbers and your close proximity to any tower makes it easy for operators to figure out your location. According to law your phone is not listened to, the network you connect through is. No matter what phone OS you have some calls can be intercepted by governments.

If you really hate the idea of being tracked I’d suggest not using a phone ever again.
